Project Overview

This residential project in Alvarado, TX enclosed a large acreage property with two different fence systems, each
chosen for what that stretch of the perimeter actually needed. Where the property required privacy, 753 linear feet
of 1x6 Western Red Cedar went up in a board-on-board pattern, stained Dark Walnut. Where the priority was
containment without blocking the view across open land, 334 linear feet of black powder-coated chain link was
installed instead — 167 feet at 6 feet tall and another 167 feet at 4 feet.
At 1,087 linear feet across four cedar runs and two chain link runs, with five gates including a 10-foot metal-frame
double drive gate, this is one of the largest residential perimeters A&O Texas Solutions has built. The cedar sits on 13-
gauge metal posts set 24 to 30 inches into concrete, with pressure-treated rails and a pressure-treated baseboard
along the full run.

Scope and Deliverables

• Site assessment: The full perimeter was walked and measured across four cedar runs and two chain link runs,
including the grade changes along the tree line.
• Utility marking: Texas 811 was called to mark public utilities before digging. The estimate records wires, gas,
pipes or hoses near the fence line, so this was not a formality on this job.
• Post setting: 13-gauge metal posts were set in concrete 24 to 30 inches below grade across the full 1,087 feet.
• Baseboard installation: A 2x6 pressure-treated baseboard was run along the cedar sections at grade.
• Rail framing: 2x4 pressure-treated rails were fastened to the metal posts using Simpson brackets.
• Board-on-board cedar: 753 linear feet of 1x6 Western Red Cedar was installed across four runs of roughly 342 ft,
319 ft, 46 ft and 46 ft.
• Level-top section: On one 95-foot stretch, 8 ft pickets were used so the top of the fence could be held level
across a grade change instead of stepping down.
• Powder-coated chain link: 167 linear feet of 6 ft black powder-coated chain link and 167 linear feet of 4 ft were
installed on the runs where the view mattered more than screening.
• Gates: Four walk gates were built, plus one 10 ft metal-frame double drive gate, all with new hardware.
• Post caps: Galvanized metal caps were fitted to the posts.
• Dark Walnut stain: The full cedar run was stained in Dark Walnut.
• Haul-off: All job debris was hauled away at no additional charge.

Timeline and Quality

The decision worth understanding on this job is not the cedar — it is where the cedar stops. Fencing 1,087 feet in
board-on-board would have walled off an acreage property on every side, including the runs facing open land where
the owners had no neighbour to screen from. Splitting the perimeter into 753 feet of solid cedar and 334 feet of black
powder-coated chain link puts privacy where privacy is needed and keeps the sightlines where the view is the asset.
Powder coating is what makes that work visually: a black coated mesh recedes against a tree line in a way galvanized
wire does not.
The 95-foot level-top section is the detail that shows the difference between measuring a fence and thinking about it.
Ground that falls away leaves an installer two options: step the panels down and accept a staircase along the top, or
run taller pickets and hold one continuous level line. Using 8 ft pickets on that stretch let the top stay level while the
baseboard followed the grade underneath — more material and more cutting, but a fence line that reads straight
from the house.
