About this project

Project Overview

This residential project in Grand Prairie, TX enclosed a property with two fence systems chosen for two very different
pieces of ground. Around the yard and along the side runs, 8 ft board-on-board cedar went up on new galvanized
posts, finished with a cedar cap and trim and stained a deep Espresso that reads almost black in full sun. Along the
wooded slope at the back, where the ground falls away toward a creek bed and mature trees stand on the line, black
iron was used instead.
The perimeter totals 239 linear feet across six runs — 95 feet, 81 feet, 44 feet, and three shorter sections of 7, 6 and 6
feet where the fence meets the house. One gate was built into the cedar, framed with a diagonal Z-brace and hung on
a galvanized post.

Scope and Deliverables

• Site assessment: All six runs were measured, including the wooded slope at the rear where the ground falls
toward the creek bed.
• Utility marking: Texas 811 was called before digging. The estimate records wires, gas, pipes or hoses near the
fence line.
• Post setting: New posts were set in concrete across the full perimeter — galvanized on the cedar runs, black on
the iron run.
• Hand-dug holes on the wooded run: Post holes on the tree line were dug by hand between root systems rather
than augered.
• Baseboard installation: A pressure-treated baseboard was run at grade along the cedar sections.
• Rail framing: Pressure-treated rails were fastened to the posts to carry the cedar pickets.
• Board-on-board cedar: 1x6 cedar pickets were installed in an overlapping board-on-board pattern to full 8 ft
height.
• Cap and trim: A cedar cap and trim were fitted along the top of the cedar runs.
• Iron run: Black iron was installed along the wooded rear slope, keeping the tree line and creek view open.
• Gate build: One cedar gate was framed with a diagonal Z-brace and hung with new hardware.
• Espresso stain: The cedar was stained in a deep Espresso tone.
• Final cleanup: The work area was inspected and cleaned after installation

Timeline and Quality

• Cedar: 1x6 pickets, board-on-board pattern.
• Iron: Black iron on the wooded rear run.
• Fence height: 8 ft on the cedar runs.
• Total length: 239 linear feet across six runs — 95 ft, 81 ft, 44 ft, 7 ft, 6 ft and 6 ft.
• Posts: New posts throughout — galvanized on cedar, black on iron.
• Rails: Pressure-treated.
• Baseboard: Pressure-treated, at grade along the cedar.
• Top detail: Cedar cap with trim.
• Gates: One cedar gate with a diagonal Z-brace and new hardware.
• Cedar finish: Espresso stain.
• Removal: No existing fence removal was included in this scope.

Outcome and Benefits

• Full-height privacy: 8 ft of board-on-board cedar screens the yard from neighbouring properties and secondstorey views.
• Views kept where they matter: Iron along the wooded rear run keeps the tree line and creek bed visible from
inside the yard.
• Grade handled correctly: Open iron pickets follow falling ground without stepping or leaving gaps beneath a
solid panel.
• Trees preserved: Hand-dug holes on the wooded run avoided cutting through established root systems.
• Finished top edge: Cedar cap and trim close the top of the cedar runs on both faces.
• Protected picket ends: A pressure-treated baseboard keeps the cedar off the soil.
• Durable frame: New posts set in concrete carry the additional wind load an 8 ft panel generates.
• Cohesive finish: The Espresso stain gives 239 feet of perimeter one consistent tone
