Project Overview
This cedar fence in Mansfield, TX is the highest specification we build. Two hundred and fifty linear feet of western
red cedar at 8 feet tall, wrapping a landscaped property in the 76063 area, with cedar rails, cedar caps and cedar trim
rather than the pressure-treated lumber most privacy fences hide behind their pickets.
It is also the only fence we install that carries a 5-year labor warranty instead of our standard 2. That is not a
promotion — it is what the build quality supports.
Why western red cedar
Most fences sold as cedar in North Texas are not western red cedar. Western red is the premium grade: naturally rot
and insect resistant, dimensionally stable in heat, and it takes stain more evenly than the alternatives because of its
tighter, more consistent grain.
The difference shows up in year three, not on installation day. Cheaper cedar cups and twists through its first
summers. Western red holds its line, which matters when the line in question runs 250 feet and includes a long
curved section.
Scope and Deliverables
• Removal and disposal of the entire old fence, with free haul-off
• 13-gauge metal posts set in concrete, 24 to 30 inches below grade
• 2x4 cedar rails — cedar, not pressure-treated pine
• 1x6 western red cedar pickets, #2 grade, at 8 ft
• 2x6 cedar caps along the top of every run
• 1x4 cedar trim
• 2x6 pressure-treated baseboard at grade
• Two new gates with new hardware
• Galvanized post caps, Simpson brackets, galvanized nails and screws
• Pre-dip stain
What the cap and trim do
A 2x6 cedar cap runs the top of the fence and a 1x4 trim board frames it. Together they cover the picket ends, protect
the exposed end grain where water gets in first, and give the run a single continuous top line instead of a row of
individual board tops.
On an 8-foot fence that top line is at eye level from a neighbouring second storey, and it is the first thing anyone
notices from inside the yard.
Timeline and Quality
Metal fencing goes up in stages: the old fence comes out, the posts go in and set in concrete, and the panels and cap
follow once the posts are solid. 811 was called before any digging so public utility lines were located and marked in
advance.
Outcome and Benefits
The finished cedar fence in Mansfield, TX encloses the property at a full 8 feet with a level capped top line carried
through the curve, and a deep, even stain across all 250 feet. It sits behind established landscaping without
competing with it — which is what a fence at this level should do.
The work carries a 5-year labor warranty and a 30-day material warranty. Cedar is a natural product, so expect some
checking and colour movement as it settles. In dry spells, water around the posts — black clay soil pulls away from
concrete when it has not rained, and that is what loosens posts on a long run.
