About this project

Project Overview

A&O Texas Solutions built a 6 ft cedar fence in Fort Worth, TX across 180 linear feet, carried on 13-gauge steel
posts set in concrete and anchored by a 14-foot double drive gate braced and wheeled to swing without sagging.
6 ft Cedar Fence in Fort Worth, TX: Project Overview
This is a large lot in west Fort Worth under a stand of mature pecans, with a driveway running to the back of the
property. Two things shaped the build: the fence had to run 180 feet through established trees without taking
one out, and it had to open wide enough for a vehicle.
The line runs in four sections — a 93-foot side, a 71-foot side, and two 8-foot returns — in 6 ft side by side cedar.
Everything above grade is cedar. Everything doing structural work is steel or pressure-treated.
Scope of Work: 180 Linear Feet and Two Gates
180 linear feet of 6 ft side by side cedar on a pressure-treated baseboard, built on 13-gauge steel posts set 24 to
30 inches deep in concrete. One 4-foot single walk gate. One 14-foot double drive gate on a wood frame with
new hardware. Debris hauled, two to three labor days.
The 14 ft Double Gate
A 14-foot opening is a driveway gate, not a garden gate. Split into two leaves, each one is seven feet of framed
cedar — and seven feet of leaf hanging off a hinge is where most wide gates fail. They sag at the latch corner
within a couple of summers, then drag, then stop latching, and the owner props them open permanently.
Two things stop that here. Each leaf carries a diagonal brace running from the bottom hinge corner up to the top
latch corner, which is the direction that puts the brace in compression and stops the frame racking into a
parallelogram. And each leaf rides on a spring-loaded caster bolted through the frame near the latch edge, so the
ground takes part of the weight instead of the hinges taking all of it. The spring lets the wheel ride over an
uneven driveway rather than binding on it.
The gate posts are the same 13-gauge steel as the rest of the line. On a gate this wide that is not optional — a
wood gate post carrying seven feet of leaf will move long before the fence does.

Why a 6 ft Cedar Fence in Fort Worth, TX Sits on Steel Posts

Tarrant County sits on expansive clay that swells with rain and shrinks hard through August. That movement
works a wood post loose, water gets into the gap, and the post rots at the soil line. Most fences in North Texas
fail from the ground up rather than the top down, which is why the part nobody sees decides how long the part
everybody sees lasts.
A 13-gauge galvanized steel post set 24 to 30 inches deep in concrete does not rot and does not twist. The
pressure-treated 2x6 baseboard does the same job at the bottom of the panel, taking the ground contact, the
string trimmer and the rain splash-back so the cedar pickets never touch soil.
Building Under a Mature Pecan Canopy
Running a fence line through established pecans changes the work. Post holes hit roots, the grade rolls where
decades of root flare have lifted it, and there is no room to swing long material between trunks. Every post here
was set individually rather than drilled in a batch, which is slower and is the only way to hold a straight top line
over ground that is not.
No tree was removed to make the line work. Fences are easier to build through a cleared yard, but a mature
pecan is worth more to a property than the hour it costs to work around it.
Unstained Cedar: What Happens Next
This cedar was left unfinished. Left alone it weathers from its honey tone to a silver-grey over roughly twelve to
eighteen months in North Texas sun. That is not damage — cedar is naturally rot-resistant with or without a
finish, and plenty of owners prefer the grey.
If you would rather keep the colour, the window matters. Staining is easiest in the first year, before the surface
weathers and before the wood needs cleaning first. Waiting three years does not make it impossible, it just adds.

Timeline, Warranty and Aftercare

Post setting, construction, gate hanging and cleanup were scoped across two to three labor days, debris hauled.
The project carries a two-year labor warranty and a thirty-day material warranty. In an extended dry spell,
running a soaker hose along the fence line keeps the clay from pulling away from the footings.
Cedar Fence Installation in Fort Worth and Across DFW
A&O Texas Solutions is based in Arlington and builds throughout Tarrant, Dallas, Johnson and Ellis Counties. A 6 ft
cedar fence in Fort Worth, TX gets the same steel posts and the same treated baseboard whether the run is
seventy feet or three hundred. If you need a drive gate wide enough for a vehicle, tell us at the estimate — a 14
foot opening is built differently from a 4-foot one, and it is far cheaper to plan for than to retrofit.
